Finally I got to see Ryan, the Billy everybody speaks about. While my Billy enthusiasm has decreased a little, I was nevertheless very excited to see Master Ryan. And I was not disappointed. In contrary: Ryan even exceeded my high expectations and I say he has made me see the show for the first time, again!
Thinking about it, it is difficult to say what was so special. It is simply the overall experience. His acting is a class of his own. His Billy is so natural, that he seems to be real. When he says “Mom” at the end of the first scene it is so melancholic you want to comfort him. But then he is so funny at the boxing scene! During “Shine” he is closely watching what the girls are doing with a kind of disgust and interest at the same time. He is an attentive listener to what his grandma has to say and during “Solidarity” he progresses to be an exceptional dancer.
“Express” with Connor Lawson was hilarious! The twinkling between them both so funny! The interaction with Mrs. Wilkinson before the “Letter” is also very funny just to be followed by that sad song. The row skipping during “Boogie” is exceptional!
Certainly “Angry Dance” was the most aggressive Angry Dance I have ever witnessed. Sometimes some of the boys are really exhausted at the end of that song, but I had the impression that Ryan could have gone on with it. I was really blown away!
Very good “Winter scene” with an exceptional Connor Lawson. I love how he manages the mixture of being funny and serious at the same time!
“Electricity” was very special again. Not only a “Street-Billy” but a lot of break dancing moves and lots of acrobatics. I thought it was brilliant!
So I can only join in the raving about Ryan. Hope to see him again when I am back!
