Seven Laureates play Piano

24. Mai 2018

Yesterday I have been to a concert in Karlsruhe. Seven laureates of the Dr. Hermann Büttner piano competition played together with the Deutsche Staatsphilharmonie Rheinland-Pfalz.

The concert started with the concert for three pianos by Johann Sebastian Bach. It continued with the concert for two pianos by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and after the interval with the piano concert in a minor by Robert Schumann and finally the rhapsody on a theme of Paganini by Sergei Rachmaninow. Quite a long concert with seven exceptional pianists. Very impressive of course were the pieces for several pianos. My feeling is, that it is already hard to play the piano alone but in a duo or even a trio together with a complete orchestra is simply amazing.

Frank Dupree did not only play the concert for two pianos, he did also conduct the orchestra. He is such a phenomenal pianist and conductor! For me the reason to go there.

Nevertheless, the whole concert was definitely worth it. I liked the ordering of the pieces from Baroque over Viennese Classic to the Romantic and late Romantic. My personal highlight of the pieces was the one of Rachmaninow played by Regina Chernychko. I found a great BBC introduction of the piece on Youtube.
